10 Tips to Optimal Nutrition

  1. Eat every two or three hours, no matter what; aim at six to eight meals per day.
  2. Eat lean complete protein with each meal.
  3. Have fruits and vegetables with each meal.
  4. Save "starchy" and high-calorie carbs for breakfast or during, and up to two hours, after intense exercise.
  5. Add healthy fats into your plan; ideally, these fats should consist of up to 30 per cent of your total daily calories.
  6. Avoid calorie-containing drinks. The drinks that fall into this category include fruit juices, soda pop, those specialty coffees with lots of fat, and frozen drinks such as Slushies.
  7. Develop food preparation strategies.
  8. Always have your foods available when it's time to eat. Don't leave home without food.
  9. Have a "cheat" meal every three or four days. A cheat meal is when you eat a favorite meal that you wouldn't eat as part of your healthy eating plan. Examples: pizza or hamburger. Those foods will fill your glycogen stores, and will psychologically satisfy you, since you'll know that you can look forward to having them occasionally. Your mind and body need a break, and having something to look forward to will be good for you, mentally and physically. It definitely helps in the long run.
  10. Achieve your targeted optimal hydration level. Don't skimp on water intake. Aim to get at least half your body weight (in ounces) of water each day.
